Internship Report - WMG
'Research on Game Modes for Scenario Creation for Automatic Driving Systems'
I had an amazing time during my internship at WMG this summer. It was really insightful and consolidated that I want to be a software engineer, and that I love having the opportunity to be creative.
The tool I was working on can be found here.
Here I will outline some of my key takeaways from my time at WMG.
My task within the team was to design and implement game modes based on an existing tool that allowed users to create scenarios.
Within this brief I had to think extensively about the needs of an end user, as well as how the needs of the company were met (i.e. the game provided useful scenarios). Another aspect of the brief was for the tool to be educational.
Technical Skills
At the start of my time at WMG, I was given the codebase of the tool that I would be extending upon. The game engine and programming language (Godot and GDScript respectively) were both unfamilliar to me, however my strong programming foundations allowed me to quickly adapt to the systems, as well as understanding code written by others.
Naturally, I came across challenges - something wouldn't work as expected, or at all! In this situation, I would take the initiative search documentation online, and failing that, try and come up with possibilities of what was going wrong, then ask my supervisor whether he had come across this particular issue before.
Networking
I had the opportunity to continually meet new people within the organisation, and talk to them about what they are working on. This networking was very valuable to me, as I learned about the many roles within the company - and I was always learning new things about the systems! I attended team meetings and standups, really getting the feel for working in industry - which I thoroughly enjoyed.
Presentation Skills
Throughout my internship, I made several presentations to both my managers, and the whole team. The overwhelmingly positive feedback that I received really boostsed my confidence, and allowed me to really believe in the value of my ideas.
Creativity
The path that my internship took really allowed me to be creative, placing a focus on the design stage. I was encouraged to think outside of the box and I decided to support my written ideas with diagrams created with Procreate.
Everyone really loved my designs, and I feel that they were a very valuable tool for me to showcase my skills!
Summary
Overall, this internship provided me with key skills that I feel will help me in my future career, and have helped me to decide that I'd love to take part in a grad scheme to further explore my interests, and how I could fit within a company I am really thankful for all of the guidance that I received during my time there, and look forward to whatever opportunities are ahead of me!
